Social Media: a Challenge and Opportunity for Local Councils

As NALC’s national partners for local council communications advice and services, it’s fair to say that social media is one of the biggest topics that we get asked about by parish and town councils.

That’s perhaps unsurprising, given the significant growth in recent years of social media right across the UK, both in terms of the number of platforms available as well as users across all demographics in all parts of the country.

For many parish and town councils, social media is often perceived as a challenge, for entirely understandable reasons. Whether it’s councils looking to get started on social media but unclear the best way to begin their social media journey, or perhaps they are unsure what policies and procedures and resources need to be in place, or whether it’s larger councils who are far more experienced on social media but are looking to branch out to new platforms, engage residents and other stakeholders in a more effective way but are unclear where to focus their time and effort.

For other councils there is the concern about perceived negativity that can sometimes sit alongside social media, whether it’s online bullying or trolling, disgruntled residents or are concerned that their social media will become unmanageable if too many people proactively engage in conversations with the council.

However it is possible to turn all of those (understandable) concerns and challenges into strategic opportunities for local councils. The councils of all shapes and sizes, social media and is a crucial part of an overall communications mix and should form a key part in the output of a council’s communication’s strategy.
